This early image of local residents posing against and on stalagmite formations in the Bat Cave is thought to be one of Ray V. Davis’s most recognizable photos. It was not known at that time that stalagmites were formed by drops of mineral-laden water and would stop growing when coated with oils from the skin.

Early cave explorers were treated to beautiful sights of the white, pristine formations, which glistened like crystals under the photographer’s lights. Jim White, wearing the large Stetson, is portrayed in this Ray V. Davis photograph surrounded by several guano mine workers. The picture was taken in the Bat Cave at the Totem Poles City of the Gods, a favorite photographic area.
